This is one of the simplest and most versatile white cake recipes I have yet to come upon. This is not my recipe, but is my basic guideline for creating my own cakes and cupcakes. I will give you some ideas and examples of how I use this recipe (courtesy of https://www.allrecipes.com/recipe/17481/simple-white-cake/) but first, here is the actual recipe (which is also pretty yummy):
Ingredients
50 m12 servings209 cals
1 cup white sugar
1/2 cup butter
2 eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 3/4 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 cup milk
Add all ingredients to list

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease and flour a 9x9 inch pan or line a muffin pan with paper liners.
In a medium bowl, cream together the sugar and butter. Beat in the eggs, one at a time, then stir in the vanilla. Combine flour and baking powder, add to the creamed mixture and mix well. Finally stir in the milk until batter is smooth. Pour or spoon batter into the prepared pan.
Bake for 30 to 40 minutes in the preheated oven. For cupcakes, bake 20 to 25 minutes. Cake is done when it springs back to the touch
My Examples/Ideas:
add 1/2 tsp of cinnamon for a cinnamon cake (feel free to add some to your frosting for the overall affect)
add some lemon or orange zest into the mix before baking
switch out the plain white sugar for a healthier alternative, like coconut sugar
for a vegan option, trade the egg for applesauce, the butter for coconut oil and the milk for almond milk (or any other # of alternatives)
add some natural coloring for a cheery-looking cake :)
