What is Organic?

By now most people have heard the word organic. Some people believe it's just a passing trend, while others refuse to buy anything but. Not everyone realizes what it means when a product is labeled organic, though. It can be confusing for those just starting out, especially if you happened to think only food receives the organic label. Nope. There are numerous products labeled as being organic; clothing, makeup, diapers, cottonballs, shampoo, toys, etc. But what does that word mean? In simplistic terms: the absence of health-harming chemicals. If you're looking for a more official and scientific definition, then look no further than what the USDA National Organic Program (NOP) says:

Organic food is produced by farmers who emphasize the use of renewable resources and the conservation of soil and water to enhance environmental quality for future generations. Organic meat, poultry, eggs, and dairy products come from animals that are given no antibiotics or growth hormones. Organic food is produced without using most conventional pesticides; fertilizers made with synthetic ingredients or sewage sludge; bioengineering; or ionizing radiation. Before a product can be labeled "organic," a Government-approved certifier inspects the farm where the food is grown to make sure the farmer is following all the rules necessary to meet USDA organic standards. Companies that handle or process organic food before it gets to your local supermarket or restaurant must be certified, too.

Basically, yay organic! Buying organic products is a great way to not only improve your own health and that of your family, but it's also a great way to reduce your carbon footprint, and convince companies that they need to reconsider their poor standards and practices and switch to organic. Purchasing organic helps the animals and the workers involved in the making of the product(s) you use, too. Am I saying that you need to buy everything organic? No. What I am saying, however, is that buying organic is a great step in leading a healthier life. Thankfully, it is a choice that is becoming more and more readily available!
